Kyla Yager

My name is Kyla and I am a New Orleans-based artist and NOLA native. I obtained my BFA in Visual Art at York University in 2018 (Toronto). After a year of social justice work in DC, and I am back in New Orleans and focused on my work as an artist. Art has always been a therapeutic getaway for me. My style has shifted over the years and changes by my mood or feeling. My goal is to eventually work with kids through the arts, whether it be art therapy or at an arts-based youth non-profit.

Abstraction satisfaction is the feeling I get when creating a piece. Being so far deep into a trance of color, pattern, and shape, that everything else tunes out and my mind is at ease. Over the years as an artist, my professional work shifted from realism to abstraction, and while still practicing both and sometimes combining the two, my paintings and drawings embody a psychedelic movement of pattern. I use acrylic paints and paint pens for most of my work, as well as micron pens and sharpie for my drawings. As an adult with ADHD and other learning disabilities, I use this as an inspiration for the process of my work. When using my mind normally, ideas and thoughts shift at a rapid pace, and therefore the patterns and ideas within a painting shift too, making a finished painting look almost scatter-brained and chaotic. When a viewer sees my art, my goal is to put them into an artistic trance that makes them feel a bit nonsensical during their experience.
